Ascension Island Currency
The currency in use on Ascension Island is the Saint Helena Pound.
The Saint Helena pound is issued by the British overseas territory of Saint Helena. Its value is equivalent to (and fixed at parity to) the British Pound Sterling (£).
Coins are issued in denominations of 1p (one penny), 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 (one pound), and £2, whilst banknotes are issued in denominations of £5, £10, and £20.
All the coins have an obverse impression bearing the effigy of Her Majesty the Queen with the circumscribing inscription "QUEEN ELIZABETH II ST. HELENA - ASCENSION".
The reverse impressions are:
£2 - The St. Helena coat of arms
£1 - Wideawake (Sooty Tern)
50p - Green Turtle
20p - The St. Helena Ebony flower
10p - A pair of dolphins
5p - Jonathan the Giant Tortoise
2p - A donkey
1p - Yellow fin Tuna
The reverse of the bank notes bear the coat of arms of the British East India company along with the Latin motto "Auspicio Regis et Senatus Angliae" which means "by command of the monarch and parliament of England".
The obverse of each bank note bears the effigy of Her Majesty the Queen along with a drawing of a scene from St. Helena and the text "Government of St. Helena".
UK pound sterling banknotes are also accepted on Ascension. Some outlets also accept US Dollars.Saint Helena banknotes are accepted on Ascension Island and Saint Helena only. Note that they cannot be exchanged in UK banks.
